Investigator training

 

All PSI investigators are required to successfully complete our training and selection programme. To find out more about our selection process click here.

Before being accepted as a PSI Investigator, all applicants must complete the first seven compulsory training modules, and attend ongoing training as required. 

 

All PSI training is developed and delivered by accredited trainers, adopting accelerated learning techniques.

 

Some of our training modules are listed below:

 

Applicant training module: Introduction to PSI

This module introduces the applicant to the realities and responsibilities of investigating the paranormal within PSI.

This training is peer and leader assessed.

 

Applicant training module: Investigation operations

This module is a detailed study of how investigations and organised are conducted.

Applicants identify the importance of our methodology, ethics and investigation protocols during this module.

 

Applicant training module: Evidence and analysis

This module ensures applicants are aware of techniques for using photographic equipment during investigations.

The module also trains potential investigators to conduct the first stage of photographic analysis.

 

Applicant training module: Ethics and conduct

This module examines the nature and implications of the standardised set of ethical guidelines PSI has adopted.  The development of ethics and professional conduct are assessed.

 

Applicant training module: The scientific method

This module introduces investigators to the scientific method, and explores the relationship between paranormal investigation, science and psychical research.

 

Applicant training module: Equipment workshop

This module introduces applicants to equipment used on PSI investigations. Participants learn why specific equipment is used, and are trained in its use.

 

Applicant training module: Experimentation workshop

This module introduces and gives potential investigators an opportunity to run mock field experiments.

Trainees are assessed on their ability to help conduct supervised experiments during investigations.

 

Applicant training module: Manual Handling

As a condition of PSI's risk assessment, in compliance with the terms of our insurers.

 

Other training module: Private case participation

Additional training for investigators participating in private case investigation.  This module focuses on the needs of the client and extended training on conduct and ethical awareness.

 

Other training module: Observer training

On occasion PSI permits members of other research organisations to participate in its investigations. 

This module is a crash course in the basics of PSI investigations, sufficient for the an observer to participate in an investigation without directly being involved with experimentation or equipment.

 

Optional Seminar: Theories of the paranormal

This seminar explains some of the unscientific theories associated with conventional paranormal investigation, and places them within the context of the scientific advancement of the field.

 

Optional Seminar: 'Orbs' - The rational explanation

This seminar delves into the various and sometimes competing natural explanations for the 'orb phenomena' and contrasts with paranormalist explanations.

 

Optional Seminar: Natural causes of paranormal experience

This seminar looks at various possible psychological and physiological explanations for allegedly paranormal experiences that have been advanced by sceptics.
